The Mandarin Chinese word for “Again” is 在 – zài.

In Chinese, “to be” works

Differently.

在 – zài can mean “is, am, are, was, were, will be” for all subjects, but only when referring to a verb, like “I am eating” or being in a place like “I am at home”

Here are some examples of how to use this word:

  • 我在吃饭. Wǒ zài chīfàn. – I am eating (food).
  • 我在睡觉. Wǒ zài shuìjiào. – I am sleeping.
  • 你在做什么? Nǐ zài zuò shénme? – What are you doing?
  • 我在家. Wǒ zàijiā. – I am at home
